We were asked if we could bring back a sign that a client found on Facebook, on the side of a building on McCurtain Street in Cork in the 1950s. After much searching we found the original Facebook photo in the Capuchin Franciscans Archive, but the detail of the sign was still largely unclear and alas no one could be found with any memory of it. So together we set about reimagining it based on the resources we had. We researched signage style and colour of the time in Cork and tried to fill in the blanks where we could. The final illustration (thank you Sam Hadley) was applied using heat applied vinyl so the uneven, worn surface underneath can come through. There’s even a cat. Most people who have passed have commented that they thought it’d been there forever and had simply been uncovered.
