Soft Rains Will Come, a body of work by artist Christopher Steenson, influenced by the experimental fiction of David Markson, the compositions of John Cage, and research drawn from climate modelling and weather forecasting, the exhibition took the form of a spatial sound installation that operated as a live radio broadcast within the gallery space. The installation combined live shortwave radio signals, found recordings of shortwave radio, field recordings, analogue photography, and written research materials to transmit an ‘imaginary landscape’.
We were asked to design a publication to accompany Christopher Steenson’s artwork and exhibition which was presented at VISUAL Centre for Contemporary Art in Carlow, Ireland, from 26 February—22 May 2022.
The publication features photography and script excerpts from the artwork, as well as new writing by David Toop and Ian Maleney, and an ‘in conversation’ between the artist and curator Benjamin Stafford.
Using a Risograph printer to create textures and glitches to echo the mood of the exhibition, as well as the featured writings within in the piece, Soft Rains will Come is a Risograph printed, singer sewn, hand-numbered edition of 100.
