The Reggio Emilia approach is a world-renowned philosophy that adopts a ‘village style approach’ to engage children, parents, and the community in the early learning process. It is globally recognised for providing children with high-quality learning experiences.

We were approached by Early Childhood Ireland to develop an interactive space where its members can access online professional learning resources. The visual language was derived from the ECI brand assets, and our concept was informed by the architectural details of the town in Italy where the learning approach emerged. A key aspect of the visual identity was the use of bespoke illustrations, which reflect the child-centered philosophy of the Reggio Emilia approach.

To achieve a truly authentic and spontaneous aesthetic, we asked our nieces and nephews to interpret specific words and draw whatever came to mind. Their expressive, uninhibited sketches captured the raw creativity of early learning, which we then commissioned an illustrator to replicate in a refined yet off-the-cuff pencil style. These drawings bring a genuine sense of playfulness and discovery to the site, reinforcing the essence of child-led exploration. The typeface Rubik does most of the heavy lifting, ensuring clarity and readability, while Libre Baskerville is used sparingly to introduce warmth and character to titles.

The website was designed with an emphasis on clarity, accessibility, and engagement, ensuring a seamless experience for educators, parents, and professionals. The content is dense and informative so the layout follows a modular design, allowing content to be easily digestible while maintaining a sense of openness and simplicity.

Subtle animations and transitions enhance engagement without overwhelming the user. The platform is designed for flexibility and scalability, allowing ECI staff to effortlessly update and manage content, whether adding new podcasts, articles, events, or learning modules. Optimised for all devices, the website provides a seamless experience across desktop, tablet, and mobile, with accessibility considerations ensuring inclusivity for all users.

The result is an intuitive and visually rich platform that reflects the core values of the Reggio Emilia approach—creativity, exploration, and community-driven learning—while providing ECI members with an efficient and enjoyable digital experience.
