Notice to advertise a lecture given by UK based human-rights lawyer Imran Khan at University College Cork, organised by staff and students in protest against the college’s invitation to BNP leader Nick Griffin to speak on campus. Khan represented the family of Stephen Lawrence over a number of years, and was invited to discuss his views on the relationship between racism and extreme right-wing politics.
The aim was to communicate a sense that the event would be an open discussion, and as such, the design employed restrained typography – using only scale and alignment for emphasis, while the proposed title was changed from ‘The Dangers of the Far-Right’ to the less didactic ‘Racism & the Far-Right’. As a tacit support for Khan’s views, the title was set in lower-case – a nod the post-WW2 anti-fascist connotations of such usage, associated with those at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm – Max Bill, Otl Aicher et al.
Minimal budget. Laser printed in black and white at local copy centres around Cork.
