The Museu da Imagem e do Som (MIS), Brazil, presents immersive experiences across cinema, music, and photography. Their latest exhibition celebrates legendary filmmaker Billy Wilder, featuring experiential rooms inspired by his films. While his work is iconic, his name is less widely known—the exhibition aimed to educate, inspire, and solidify his legacy in cinema history.
The identity revolves around a graphic symbol inspired by Wilder’s iconic glasses and the viewfinder of a camera. This flexible mark is used throughout the identity to highlight these cinematic moments, providing a glimpse into Wilder’s perspective during filming. The lens device is subtly integrated into the wordmark, symbolising Wilder’s preference for letting his work take centre stage.
The colour palette draws inspiration from the vibrant film posters of Wilder’s time, maintaining a fresh and relevant look. This varied palette allows the identity to be adjusted based on the desired tone, whether playful or informative. The typography is bold and powerful, echoing Wilder’s impactful work, with a historical nod to the lettering styles popular during his peak era.
Billy Wilder’s films were bold, unconventional, and ahead of their time. His mantra, “Think outside the door,” captured his innovative approach. This identity aimed to immerse viewers in Wilder’s perspective while balancing a modern feel with subtle nods to his era. Given the diversity of his work, the design remains versatile, ensuring a cohesive yet dynamic visual language.
