An Post commissioned a special stamp to mark the golden anniversary of one of the most iconic and trusted logos in Ireland. Guaranteed Irish was started in 1974 by the Irish Goods Council to encourage consumers to buy Irish. It now helps businesses and consumers identify the products and services that benefit local communities and Ireland as a whole.
When designing the stamp we wanted the much loved logo to take centre stage. A 1977 annual report cover which we uncovered in our research, features a consumer selecting a product in a supermarket. This formed the basis to our design approach.
We recreated this in a simple yet playful way. The hand in this composition is selecting the dot within the i as if it were a product. With the i representing Ireland, it visually encompasses the concept of choosing Irish, further communicated by switching the colour of the dot to green. The logo is printed in metallic gold to mark the 50th anniversary and the chosen typeface Deckard is by an Irish type designer.
