DCTV is a not-for-profit community television channel for Dublin and its surrounding areas. We worked with DCTV to create a new identity that would better encapsulate its ethos – one of empowerment, participation and diversity. In a world full of digital content and streaming, a more traditional broadcast channel is almost like an act of rebellion. With this in mind, we were drawn to more analogue materials and aesthetics, and it was while ripping up paper and channelling the do-it-yourself attitude of punk, that we uncovered a very simple way to create the main letterforms of ‘D’ and ‘C’, something that could be re-created quite easily by anyone. The use of ripped paper and the layering of hand drawn elements was continued throughout the visual language, with the colour palette itself being derived from layering different coloured cellophane on top of each other. Ultimately there are no hard and fast rules in how the elements should be combined, in fact, the more chaotic the better!
