As part of DCC’s Winter Lights Festival Dublin City Culture Company approached Stephen Mac Devitt to create a projection mapping piece for the Hugh Lane Gallery. Rather than having stock imagery projected onto the buildings as in previous years, DCC wished for the 2019 pieces to be created by the residents of the city themselves. The project was an artist led community workshop working with Synge Street transition year students.
The project consisted of a site visit to the gallery with the twenty six students where the Harry Clarke stained glass and Sean Scully paintings were favourites. Workshops were held in school where they were introduced to the design process: brainstorming, creating, refining, working with the facade of the building and solving the challenges the technology brought. Taking a lead from the aforementioned artists, the students worked in groups over four sessions to create their design, a modern take on a stained glass inspired Christmas tree.
The projections lit up the front of the Hugh Lane Gallery for the month of December as part of the DCC Winter Lights Festival. The gallery was so happy with the piece they used it as their Christmas card.
