Audience Labs was conceived during the Royal Opera House’s award-winning Open Up project in 2017. Over the last three and a half years, Audience Labs led the charge in unlocking artistic understanding of technology and the many possibilities it presents, bringing together creatives, artists and technology companies to create contemporary opera and ballet experiences that break new ground in artistic expression, reaching new and diverse audiences with technological innovation.
Overcoming the challenges of the pandemic, in their final project Audience Labs brought the world’s first opera in hyper reality, Current, Rising, to the stage. Landing to critical acclaim, the 15-minute experience, which blended historic stagecraft with cutting-edge technology, immersed audiences in an atmospheric virtual world in which they were placed at the very centre of the performance.
I was brought on by Annette Mees the head of Audience Labs to create an identity for Audience Labs and design a digital publication showcasing the highlights of their program as its time with Royal Opera House came to a close. We worked to create the Audience Labs constellation, working with cool and warm toned colours and shapes to represent both Ballet and Opera which form the basis of the work Audience Labs does in bringing technology into stagecraft. Audience Labs will live on in new and evolving forms as Annette herself transitions into a fellowship at King’s College.
