Ark – Crafted Creatures

Crafted Creatures was an exhibition at the Ark in collaboration with the Crafts Council. The challenge was to make the event appealing to the young audience (3–13 year olds) while retaining the integrity of the works on show.
Our design approach was literally to provide a fun, playful backdrop for the exhibits. Strong blocks of colour and typography provide a graphic environment across promotional items as well as in the exhibition itself. Quotes from the artists appeared in unexpected places, on walls, floors and under exhibits. Continuing the graphic backdrop while also drawing attention to a core concept of the exhibition — materiality. We also designed a low-cost, disposable way-finding system, using simple folded card structures and perspex cubes from The Ark's storeroom.
