We were invited to design a stamp to celebrate the centenary of The Irish Free State joining the League of Nations in 1923. Having explored a range of options that drew upon the League of Nations’ identity, we decided on a graphic representation that would resonate and be understandable to a twenty-first-century audience.
The chosen idea reflected Ireland’s optimism and strength in joining the League — a moment when the Irish Free State stepped out on the world stage with confidence and flew its flag for the first time alongside the other member states. The stamp depicts in graphic form the flag colours of the member nations that preceded Ireland and, in monotone, those that came after. The stamp was issued along with a first-day cover and cancellation.
