A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings

Collapsing Horse Theatre Company asked me to design the poster and promotional material for (what was to be their final play) ‘A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings’. The play is based on a short story by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The story is told on stage by two storytellers using puppets and props.

In the story the old man is caged, unable to leave. The poster image shows a photograph of one hand holding the old man and another holding the wings. It gives a sense of both the story and how the story is told. The title typography is split (by a lowercase “with”) echoing the split in the imagery. The haphazardly set type reflects the unpredictable style of the storytelling.
