Brief

66 Voices is a sensory-led installation which amplifies the financial struggles of third-level students in Ireland. Funded by N-TUTORR, the project’s objective was to create an experiential installation that focused on themes of equality, diversity, and inclusion. It aimed to educate viewers about the challenges students face through an engaging and personal approach, breaking away from the detached nature of traditional statistical reports often associated with this topic.

Research

A 2023 Higher Education Authority (HEA) poll revealed that over one-third of students considered dropping out of college, with financial pressure cited as a key reason. To explore this issue further, audio-recorded interviews were conducted with students from diverse backgrounds, addressing topics such as housing, expenses, employment, and financial stress. These interviews aimed to capture a sense of the collective student experience in Ireland.

The Identity

The visual identity draws attention through bold typography and memorable copywriting. The number 66 is integrated into the design by replacing the recurring quotation mark glyph, symbolising the voices of the 66 interviewees.

Outcome & Reaction

The installation comprises three bespoke panels with audio and rear-projected visuals, immersing viewers in the interviewees’ compelling stories. The design’s multisensory approach ensures that the narratives resonate with viewers on a visceral level, with visitor testimonials highlighting feelings of empathy, anxiety and relatability.

66 Voices gained significant attention, leading to exhibitions at events such as The N-TUTORR National Conference in Croke Park, the launch of Dublin Learning City Festival, The Creative Arts Summer School, and The Good Guide Launch in IADT, Dún Laoghaire. Additionally, it was featured in the Irish Times and on RTÉ Radio, raising national awareness about the financial challenges students face and achieving the project’s goal.
