Inspired by the global declaration movement, Design Declares started in the UK in 2022. The initiative comprises a growing group of designers, studios, agencies and institutions ready to declare a climate and ecological emergency. Design Declares Ireland was the first global adopter of the initiative, and chapters have recently joined us in Brazil and Australia. At the time of writing, over 1000 worldwide declarations were made, with 173 in Ireland alone.
Like every industry activity, design has an environmental impact. Whether that’s a product, a piece of packaging, or an exhibition space, it’s up to us whether that deliverable is harmful or not. If we want to instigate change in our industry and reduce these impacts, then we must be willing to share our collective knowledge. Design Declares Ireland offers support to all its signatories through shared best practices, resources and insights, all found in our toolkit.
As part of this knowledge-sharing community, Design Declares Ireland and 100 Archive are pleased to introduce our Prelude series. Each article will feature pioneering Irish designers, agency owners, and educators who have already started their sustainability journey and are laying the groundwork for the rest of us to follow.
