On the 21st January 1919, Dáil Éireann met for the first time and claimed the right of Ireland to self-government. Dáil100 is an initiative of the Houses of the Oireachtas commemorating the 100th anniversary of political discourse, debate and law-making in Dáil Éireann.
This project was led by the content - the main aim being to create an engaging and easy way for the public to learn more about the first sitting of the Dáil from the general election held in the UK in December 1918 right up until May 1921 which is when the members of the second Dáil were elected.
The site is structured around an interactive timeline spanning these dates, allowing people to explore the breadth of content which was either curated from existing sources or written specifically to communicate often unknown or interesting aspects of this important period in Irish history.
We designed bespoke, interconnected and accessible areas for the detailed long read articles, photo essays, debate transcripts (with additional context notations, previously un-presented), member biographies, audio snippets, events and educational resources as well as for the collaborative collections curated by both the Parliamentary Library and the National Archives.
The project was launched to immediate success, helping the public engage with the centenary celebrations that were kicked off in early 2019 and becoming the most popular online resource for teachers & educators looking for sources relating to this time period.
